Book Review:

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong this book really mostly talks about his relationship to his mother and I thought this was gonna be it like this was just gonna be about him and his mother and a relationship and their past and their shared past but then he starts talking about his grandmother and his mother's relationship to his grandmother but also his grandmother Simon Vietnam

I was like fine that's great but then he starts talking about this boy Trevor that he's met and he starts a sexual sexual relationship with him and then that starts to you know kind of become a plot and I'm like okay that's what this plot is the thing is this book does not have a plot and then a halfway through

I was like this is what's happening this is what this is and so as beautiful as it was and as much as I was immersed in the writing because the writing literally you all of the senses you can feel and taste and smell and touch because the writing is so evocative and it's very very strong but it wasn't enough

I wish it was enough but it wasn't and the funny part is is that reading this constantly I kept thinking that the brain don't care about the character the little dog his name's little dog it's ocean walk like it kept my mind kept going back to this being about his life because it really does mirror and mimic his life the more you read about it was wrong but it's not about him it's a fictional work and it kept getting tripped up on that

I just thought why not just make it a nonfiction and at times I really wanted to focus on the generational aspects of fences you have him you've got his mother and you've got his grandmother and I wanted that to be the focus of the story I want to learn more about the generation like his grandmother was such an interesting character and it was so beautifully written at times just because you get the sort of history of the family

I wanted that to be the focus and the central theme of the story which in some ways it was but it just kept going on tangents there were so many tangents in this book and it wasn't enough to sustain the beautiful writing that

This book contains and so maybe if it was written as sort of short form essays that could have been successful but as a novel as a fictional piece novel from start to finish it wasn't successful so beautiful writing stunning prose great inside no plot not fictional yes these were like my thoughts in a nutshell

I remember thinking it's the kind of exhausting reading beautiful prose all like that in one go constantly because you just want to sit and focus but at the same time you also want to get on with it and so it was exhausting just to kind of get myself to stay sick with it
